The Israeli Knesset finally approved, in the second and third readings, a bill providing for the imposition of the death penalty against Palestinian prisoners, in a move described by observers as unprecedented and constituting a dangerous escalation.
The law, drafted by the extremist minister Itamar Ben Gvir, grants military courts the authority to issue death sentences against any Palestinian who intentionally causes the death of an Israeli for "national or hostile" motives. Human rights experts considered that the law consolidates discrimination, as it "exempts Israelis from any similar trial if they kill Palestinians," and it will be applied retroactively to new cases, putting the lives of hundreds of prisoners in direct danger.
