The Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal in Rabat concluded, on Wednesday, a case that garnered significant local attention, by upholding the initial ruling that acquitted Mohamed Saimo, the mayor of the Ksar El Kebir municipality, along with 11 other individuals, of the charges against them.
This decision confirms the findings of the initial stage, following a legal process that began with a complaint filed in 2021 by a number of local actors, alleging suspicions related to the management of certain projects and infrastructure, in addition to real estate disputes within the city. The charges included embezzlement and squandering of public funds, as well as illegal benefit from an institution under supervision, which were primarily directed at Saimo, while the other defendants were accused of participating in those acts. During the initial trial, the prosecution had requested harsher penalties, while the concerned party had been under conditional release since December 2023 by a decision of the investigating judge at the Court of Appeal, before being acquitted of the charges against him.
