Zakiya Tahraoui, Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests in charge of Fisheries, paid a field visit today, Wednesday, to the industrial unit “TUNAMAX” specializing in the canning and freezing of fish, located in the industrial zone “Eco Parc Sidi Meki” in the province of Berrechid, belonging to the Casablanca Maritime District.
According to a press release, this visit comes within the framework of monitoring industrial units specialized in the processing and valorization of marine products, and assessing their production capacities and adopted technological structures, as well as evaluating their contribution to the development of the industrial fabric related to the fisheries sector at the national level.
The statement explained that the industrial unit “TUNAMAX” has a production capacity of up to 100 million cans annually with a two-shift system, over an industrial area of approximately 20,000 square meters, including 19,000 square meters covered, with a total investment estimated at 250 million dirhams.
The unit also employs about 450 people in each work shift, which makes it among the industrial projects that contribute to creating job opportunities and supporting economic and industrial development at the regional level.
The unit includes five multi-shaped lines for canning fish, in addition to two freezing tunnels with temperatures reaching minus 40 degrees Celsius, with a storage capacity in negative cooling rooms of 2,400 tons at minus 25 degrees, which enables it to meet the requirements of the national and international markets.
At the environmental level, “TUNAMAX” has adopted sustainability equipment, including a wastewater treatment plant, the use of high-efficiency industrial boilers, as well as a system for producing renewable energy by means of solar panels with a capacity of 400 kilowatts peak, in addition to projects to valorize secondary products within the framework of a circular economy approach.
The statement indicated that the Casablanca Maritime District includes 63 approved industrial units in the field of marine industries, including storage, freezing, canning and packaging of fresh fish activities, highlighting that the production of this district reached a total of 13,240 tons during the year 2025 with a value exceeding 280 million dirhams.
The same source confirmed that the national marine industries sector has continued to develop in recent years, as the number of industrial units has increased from 430 units in 2016 to 553 units in 2025, in parallel with the exports of marine products reaching 26.6 billion dirhams during the past year.
The sector also contributed, according to the statement, to creating more than 45,000 additional jobs in land-based marine industries during the last ten years, reflecting its strategic role in economic, social and industrial development in Morocco.
On the sidelines of the visit, Zakiya Tahraoui reiterated the commitment of the Secretariat of State in charge of Fisheries to continue enhancing the sector's competitiveness, and encouraging sustainable and responsible valorization of marine resources.
