A widely circulated video showing Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni taking the oath of office for a seventh presidential term inside what appeared to be a bulletproof glass box sparked a wide wave of sarcastic comments and varying political interpretations on social media platforms. The scene was no longer just a regular protocol moment, but rather turned into fertile ground for interpretation, with some seeing it as a reflection of extreme security tightening in a sensitive political context, and others considering it an intense symbolic image of a long-term rule that goes beyond the logic of traditional power circulation.
In comments that were not devoid of political mockery, a number of commentators went on to say that the "glass box" was no longer just a precautionary measure, but had become a ready-made metaphor for describing an extended political phase, where the concept of electoral entitlement is reformulated each time in a way that seems to limit the horizons of change, while the same leadership scene remains remarkably constant. Others considered that the continuation of the same leadership for long consecutive terms turns the elections, in their view, from a moment of open political competition into a "periodic ritual for renewing legitimacy" rather than an actual transfer of power. And between readings that see in the matter evidence of political stability and the state's ability to control its security rhythm, and others that criticize what they describe as the absence of a real turnover of government, the scene remained confined inside that "glass box" not only as a physical barrier, but as a symbolism open to questions of contemporary African politics: Where does security end and the political meaning of power begin?
