The Regional Office of the National Union of Public Health, the founding member of the Democratic Federation of Labor, in the territorial health group and health agencies in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, expressed its deep concern regarding what it described as "serious events" witnessed by the Lalla Meryem Regional Hospital in the city of Larache in recent days, which resulted in a state of fear and panic among health personnel, patients, and users.
In a statement, the regional office strongly condemned the acts of chaos and violence that the health institution witnessed, especially at the emergency department level, pointing out that the hospital witnessed, during the early hours of one of the past nights, and then on the morning of Friday, May 29, 2026, events related to the storming of groups of people carrying white weapons, and the accompanying tension, confrontations, and sabotage that affected some of the department's facilities. The statement explained that these events resulted in damage to a number of equipment and facilities, including doors and glass in the department, and also endangered the safety of workers, patients, and users, and affected the normal flow of health services within the institution. The union considered that these events reflect the increase in violence within health institutions, especially in emergency departments that receive large numbers of citizens daily in critical health conditions, stressing that the continuation of these behaviors threatens working conditions and affects the quality of services provided to users. The regional office recorded that the health staff at the hospital continue to perform their duties despite the difficult circumstances and daily challenges, expressing its pride in the efforts made by the workers in the institution in serving patients, and emphasizing that the safety of health staff, patients, and users remains a non-negotiable priority. In this context, the union announced its full solidarity with the health staff working at Lalla Meryem Regional Hospital, demanding that the regional and security authorities intervene urgently to ensure security within the institution and protect its workers and users. It also called for the establishment of a permanent security center inside the hospital, and the strengthening of guarding procedures and the organization of access to the emergency department, to ensure the continuity of health services in safe and organized conditions, as well as providing the necessary follow-up and support for the health staff psychologically affected by the repercussions of these events. The Regional Office of the National Union of Public Health concluded its statement by emphasizing that protecting health staff is not a sectoral demand, but an essential condition for ensuring the continuity of the public health facility and improving the quality of services provided to citizens, raising the slogan: "The safety of health staff is a red line.. No health service without security and dignity."
