HIBAPRESS – Agadir
Coinciding with the start of the new academic year, a number of students in Agadir city found themselves facing a significant increase in rent prices, which has made managing housing costs more difficult for students coming from different cities and regions to pursue their studies at Ibn Zohr University.
Dr. Hassan Taleb, a professor at the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, sparked the discussion about this increase, pointing out that the rent for a single room has reached about 1500 dirhams, after it was around 700 dirhams in recent years. This increase comes at a time when students are already facing increasing costs related to study, housing, and transportation, raising questions about the ability of families and students to bear these increases, especially with the start of the academic year and the rise in demand for housing. Dr. Hassan Taleb questioned whether the responsible sector would intervene to curb these increases and protect students from rent apartment brokers, or if some students might find themselves facing the option of resorting again to distance learning, as happened during the COVID pandemic, as a last resort to overcome the housing crisis.
