The Kingdom of Morocco, during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York in "ARRIA" format, renewed its support and absolute solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the "cowardly" attacks carried out by the Houthis.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, stated during this meeting, organized by the Kingdom of Bahrain, a non-permanent member of the Security Council: "On behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco, I would like to reaffirm our absolute support and solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia against these cowardly attacks committed by the Houthis."
The Minister added that the Kingdom of Morocco condemns in the strongest terms the Houthi attack on the holy city of Mecca, emphasizing that Morocco "confirms its support for all measures taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect its territory and ensure the tranquility of its population."
Bourita pointed out during this meeting, which was organized on the theme "Safe Seas, Shared Security: Protecting Freedom of Navigation in a Changing Security Environment," that the Houthi attempt to control the Bab el-Mandeb Strait "reminds us that the security of international straits is no longer the sole responsibility of states, but is also threatened by non-state actors."
The Minister highlighted that this situation requires the international community to reconsider its approaches.
On another note, Bourita noted that the Hormuz Strait crisis has shed light on a bitter truth: despite the existence of a legal framework, the international community still lacks mechanisms capable of preventing crises or managing them when they erupt.
This meeting, which was attended by members of the Security Council, in addition to UN member states and experts in the field, provided an opportunity to emphasize the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz quickly and reaching a swift resolution to the crisis in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
