The spread of volcanic ash resulting from the activity of Mount Etna has caused the suspension of flights at Catania Airport, on the Italian island of Sicily, until 4 PM, according to airport authorities.
The decision comes as a precautionary measure in light of the impact of volcanic ash on air navigation safety. Meanwhile, the relevant authorities are monitoring the developments of volcanic activity and surrounding conditions, in preparation for a decision regarding the resumption of air traffic.
It is expected that the suspension of flights will lead to delays or cancellations in a number of scheduled flights through the airport, depending on the situation's developments and decisions by civil aviation authorities.
