The agricultural sector in the Nador province, especially in the plains of Sabra and Karta, on the outskirts of the city of Zayo, faces increasing challenges amid consecutive years of drought and declining water resources. This has directly impacted farmers' activities and their ability to maintain the continuity of agricultural production.
Water scarcity for irrigation is one of the most significant constraints facing farmers in the region, as available water resources have become insufficient to meet the needs of various crops, at a time when the repercussions of climate change and declining rainfall continue.
In parallel with the water crisis, farmers find themselves facing a continuous rise in production costs, particularly fuel and fertilizer prices, in addition to the increased cost of labor and the difficulty of securing it. Furthermore, the challenges of marketing agricultural products add to the pressures faced by professionals and threaten the profitability of several agricultural activities.
A number of farmers in the region have expressed their concern about the future of agricultural activity, given the current conditions that are imposing additional costs on them and limiting their ability to continue production at the usual pace.
In contrast, farmers' demands are increasing for practical and sustainable solutions that ensure the provision of irrigation water, alleviate production burdens, and improve the conditions for marketing products. There are also calls for adopting measures that align with the specifics of the agricultural sector in the province and enhance farmers' ability to cope with the repercussions of drought and maintain production continuity.
