The candidate for the March 24 presidential election in Senegal, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, announced on Wednesday his decision to withdraw his candidacy from the presidential race.
This withdrawal, which comes just before the end of the electoral campaign, now brings the list of candidates to 18.
Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, who made this announcement during a press conference organized in the Senegalese capital, called on his supporters to vote for candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The Constitution of Senegal stipulates that in the event of withdrawal of one of the candidates before the first round, “the election is continued with the other candidates in the running”. “The Constitutional Council modifies the list of candidates accordingly. The election date is maintained.”
Some 7,033,854 voters registered in the electoral register will go to the polls on March 24 to elect the fifth President of the Republic, after Léopold Sédar Senghor, Abdou Diouf, Abdoulaye Wade and Macky Sall.
The provisional results of the first round of the presidential election will be announced no later than April 1, 2024 by the National Votes Census Commission, one day before the end of Macky Sall’s mandate.
