The city of M'diq is moving towards establishing an integrated space for recreational diving and underwater activities, with a total investment of 40 million dirhams. The project's implementation will span two years, 2027 and 2028, and aims to develop the tourist, sports, and environmental offerings in the region.
The Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, during its ordinary session held last Monday in Tangier, approved a multi-party partnership agreement to implement the project. This project aims to establish the first integrated space of its kind in Morocco, combining diving, marine exploration, scientific research, and training.
The project targets the valorization of the marine potential of M'diq's coasts, diversification of the city's tourism product, and attracting national and international sports events. It also aims to create new job opportunities, boost the local economy, develop mechanisms for marine environmental protection, and encourage applied scientific research.
The project includes eight main components, comprising the development of an underwater space dedicated to diving, the establishment of a marine platform for scientific research and environmental protection, and a reception and management center on land. This center will house administrative facilities, a presentation and awareness hall, and storage for diving equipment.
It also includes the establishment of spaces for training and supervision, scientific research, and a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in the blue economy. Furthermore, it will adopt a smart digital system for facility management and establish continuous mechanisms for marine environmental conservation.
A financial envelope of 40 million dirhams has been allocated to the project, distributed equally between the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports and the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, with a contribution of 20 million dirhams from each party.
The list of partners contributing to the project's implementation includes the M'diq-Fnideq Prefecture, the Municipality of M'diq, the Regional Investment Center, as well as the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the National Ports Agency, the Royal Moroccan Federation for Diving and Underwater Activities, the National Institute of Fisheries Research, the Regional Directorate of Environment, and the Provincial Delegation of Tourism.
The project completion deadline has been set at 18 months, starting from the date of approval of the first works contract. A steering and follow-up committee, headed by the Governor of the M'diq-Fnideq Prefecture, will oversee the implementation of its various stages.
