Bank of Morocco stated that the number of new banknotes issued by the bank during 2025 reached approximately 800 million notes, compared to 650 million notes a year prior.
Bank of Morocco clarified, in its annual report on financial market infrastructures and payment methods for 2025, that by adding recycled banknotes (3.5 billion notes), the total volume of banknotes made available to banks reached 4.3 billion notes in 2025, compared to 4.1 billion notes in 2024.
The analysis of supply by denomination highlighted the dominance of 200 dirham banknotes, which constituted 50 percent of the total distributed notes (2.1 billion notes), followed by the 100 dirham denomination with a share of 45 percent (1.9 billion notes). Banknotes of 50 and 20 dirham denominations represented, respectively, 2 percent (92 million notes) and 3 percent (143 million notes) of the distributed volume.
The report also recorded an acceleration in overall cash circulation, with the outstanding amount reaching 513 billion dirhams at the end of December 2025, a year-on-year increase of 15.5 percent. Thus, the ratio of credit money to gross domestic product reached 30 percent.
Regarding the processing of banknotes, operations carried out jointly by Bank of Morocco and private sorting centers covered 4.7 billion banknotes (a 2 percent increase), while 388 million unfit notes were destroyed.
Concurrently, the phenomenon of counterfeiting continued its downward trend, with 4,064 counterfeit notes detected (a 10 percent decrease), which is an average of 1.2 counterfeit notes per million circulated notes.
