The Algerian Parliament, with its two chambers, is preparing to hold two extraordinary sessions tomorrow, Sunday, to vote on a decision allowing the deployment of units from the People's National Army outside the country, coinciding with the signing of a new military agreement between Algeria and Niger.
Algerian parliamentary and political sources revealed in statements to the media that members of the Council of the Nation and the National People's Assembly have received invitations to attend the sessions, without an official announcement of their agenda.
Miloud Ould Seddik, a member of the National Defense Committee in the Algerian Parliament, confirmed that the deputies received an invitation to attend a special session, suggesting it concerns the ratification of sending military forces abroad.
Article 91 of the Algerian Constitution stipulates the necessity of approval by two-thirds of the members of each parliamentary chamber to send army units outside the country, while Article 31 allows participation in peacekeeping operations in accordance with the principles of international and regional organizations.
The move comes after the signing of a military agreement last Wednesday between the Commander of the Algerian Army, Lieutenant General Saïd Chengriha, and the Nigerien Minister of Defense Salifou Modi, amidst expectations that the action is linked to strengthening security cooperation between the two countries and confronting challenges in the Sahel region.
