The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) recently started production of the project to strengthen and secure the drinking water supply of the city of Guercif and neighboring localities from the surface water of Oued Zobzit.
With a total cost of approximately 470 million dirhams, financed by ONEE in particular through a loan from the African Development Bank, the project to strengthen and secure the drinking water supply of the city of Guercif, includes the construction of a treatment plant with a drinking water flow of 25,920 m³ per day, the construction of a treated water reservoir with a capacity of 3,500 m³ as well as the laying of 80 km of pipes, the Office indicates in a press release.
The commissioning of this important project was carried out on August 9, in advance thanks to the considerable efforts of the ONEE teams, from a raw water intake made on the Oued Zobzit and will make it possible to produce, initially, a flow of treated water of approximately 13,000 m³ per day, and consequently to secure the drinking water supply of the city of Guercif and neighboring localities while waiting for the completion of the Targa Ou Madi dam, the press release continues.
This major project, which is part of the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027, the agreement for which was signed on January 13, 2020 before His Majesty King Mohammed VI, will make it possible to overcome the deficit recorded in the drinking water supply of this area following the drop in the water table level caused by the low rainfall that the region has experienced in recent years, a consequence of successive years of drought.
It will also meet the drinking water needs of the town of Guercif and surrounding communities by 2040, benefiting a total population of more than 258,000 inhabitants.
This major project will contribute to improving the living conditions of the beneficiary populations and to supporting the socio-economic development of the region, the press release concludes.
