Agadir: Official launch of the 20th edition of the “African Lion” exercise


In accordance with the High Instructions of His Majesty the King, Supreme Leader and Chief of General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, the FAR and the American Armed Forces are co-organizing, until May 31, the 20th edition of the exercise “ African Lion.”

At the headquarters of the South Zone General Staff in Agadir, an opening ceremony was organized on Monday announcing the official launch of this multinational joint exercise in the presence of representatives of the participating countries.

During this ceremony co-chaired by Major General Mohammed Benlouali, Chief of Staff of the Southern Zone and Major General Todd R. Wasmund, commanding general of the Southern European Task Force of the United States Army- Africa, the scenario of the command post simulation exercise and the related activities of this 20th edition were presented.

Around 7,000 elements of the armed forces from around twenty countries in addition to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are taking part alongside the FAR and the American Armed Forces in these large-scale military maneuvers.

Speaking on this occasion, Major General Mohammed Benlouali, Chief of Staff of the South Zone, stressed that the “African Lion 2024” exercise marks twenty years of fruitful cooperation, distinguished partnership, and commitment. permanent in favor of the values ​​of peace and security, welcoming in this regard the spirit of mutual trust and the common will of Morocco and the United States of America for the diversification and development of these military maneuvers.

For his part, Major General Todd R. Wasmund, commanding general of the Southern European Task Force of the US Army-Africa, affirmed that “Morocco will always remain the cradle of the African Lion exercise”, expressing his thanks to the FAR for their unwavering commitment to this exercise for a period of 20 years of partnership.

Scheduled to take place in Benguerir, Agadir, Tan-Tan, Akka and Tifnit, the “African Lion 2024” exercise includes several activities including tactical, land, maritime and air exercises, combined, day and night, an exercise special forces, airborne operations, as well as an operational planning exercise for the “Task Force” staff executives.

This twentieth edition also includes training to combat weapons of mass destruction and a range of medico-surgical and social services provided for the benefit of the population of the Akka region by a military field hospital.

Contributing to the strengthening of operational, technical and procedural interoperability between the participating armies, the “African Lion 2024” exercise, the largest exercise conducted in Africa, remains an unmissable event where military executives come together to exchange information. procedures and experiences, particularly in terms of training and combined joint training.

This twentieth edition testifies to the sustainability which characterizes the cooperation between the FAR and the American Armed Forces, reflecting the historical and solid links which bind the two countries.
