The unions representing employees of local authorities are awaiting the results of the next meeting with officials of the Ministry of the Interior this May 28 as part of the sectoral dialogue, while adhering to the demand for a salary increase of 2,000 Dirhams per month for all employees in the sector.

Some components of the quartet had demanded a salary increase of Dh3,000 for local government employees, before reducing the amount of the increase to Dh2,000, after the government approved a general salary increase of Dh1,000 per month for all public sector employees and educational groups, in accordance with the agreement that closed the central social dialogue at the end of last April.

Although local government employees received a Dh1,000 increase, as did public sector employees, unions are demanding “special compensation” which was in place until early 2003, before being scrapped after the government approved a general salary increase for public sector and local government employees.
