Olympic Games 2024: An “Islamist-inspired” attack plan foiled


French authorities announced on Friday that they had foiled a terrorist attack which targeted an Olympic Games event in a football stadium in Saint-Étienne.

The French Interior Ministry specified in a press release that the planned attack had been planned by an 18-year-old Chechen national who was arrested.

The planned attack targeted the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, according to the first elements of the investigation.

“On May 22, 2024, the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI) carried out an arrest in Saint-Etienne (Loire) of an 18-year-old Chechen national suspected of wanting to commit an Islamist-inspired attack on the ground. national,” the statement said.

This is, according to the same source, “the first foiled attack against the Olympic Games”.

The French authorities are hard at work organizing and securing the Olympic Games which will take place from July 26 to August 11.

In an interview published this Friday in the daily “Le Figaro”, Bertrand Chamoulaud, national director of territorial intelligence, affirmed that the security situation is “under control”, while admitting that “zero risk does not exist”.
