Hunter Biden, son of the US president, was convicted Tuesday by a court in Wilmington, Delaware (east) of illegal possession of firearms. The court found Hunter Biden guilty of all three federal firearms-related charges he faced, finding that he violated existing laws intended to prevent the carrying of weapons by drug users.

It is the first time that the son of a sitting US president has been convicted of a crime, although the offenses in question predate Joe Biden’s arrival in the White House.

In a statement, the US president once again expressed his support for his son, while affirming that he “will continue to respect the legal process while Hunter considers an appeal”.

Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000. The final verdict in this case is expected in mid-October.
