June 24, International Day of Women in Diplomacy

Women have participated in diplomacy for centuries, but their contribution has often been overlooked. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and, therefore, half of its potential. Women bring immense benefits to diplomacy. Their leadership style, expertise and priorities broaden the scope of issues examined and the quality of results.

Research shows that when women serve in governments and parliaments, they adopt laws and policies that are more favorable to ordinary citizens, the environment and social cohesion. Advancing measures to increase women’s participation in peace and political processes is essential to achieve de facto equality in the context of entrenched discrimination.
