The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amin Tahraoui, confirmed that the issue of emergency departments is a top priority in the health system reform project, as it is an essential facility for saving lives and ensuring immediate care for citizens.
Tahraoui said, in response to questions from parliamentarians in the House of Councilors on Tuesday, that emergency departments are experiencing some difficulties, including overcrowding and a shortage of human resources, as well as the fact that about 60 percent of the cases arriving there are not emergencies, which increases pressure and weakens the quality of care. He pointed out that the ministry has taken a number of measures to improve and develop the work of emergency reception services, through a short-term action plan (10 weeks), which includes reorganizing internal services, standardizing protocols and medical procedures for dealing with patients in emergency situations, and strengthening the presence of doctors in emergency reception services permanently. The government official added that this plan includes setting a unified sign for emergency reception services nationwide, improving health workers' rest rooms to ensure decent working conditions, in addition to improving reception areas and waiting rooms to create a comfortable space for patients and organize and arrange their access to medical services. Tahraoui continued that the ministry has also adopted a structural reform plan in the medium term, which is based, in particular, on reforming training in emergency medicine and strengthening human resources, and including special financial and professional incentives to attract doctors and nurses to this specialty, and developing "SAMU" networks to secure pre-hospital care, as well as standardizing protocols and medical procedures for dealing with patients in emergency situations.
