A 44-year-old Moroccan woman was subjected to a physical assault in the Sesto San Giovanni area, east of Milan, northern Italy, after two men attacked her, claiming her clothes were "immodest".
A statement issued by the Municipality of Sesto San Giovanni indicated that the victim was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries and bruises, while the police arrested the suspects and opened an investigation on charges of assault and discrimination based on gender and religion. The mayor strongly condemned the incident, stressing that what happened was "unacceptable in a society that respects individual freedom," and emphasizing that Italy "will not allow the imposition of behavioral patterns or religious values by force". The incident has sparked a wave of condemnation in Italian political and media circles, amid demands to tighten measures to protect women and ensure respect for personal freedoms.
