HIBAPRESS – Omar Razzini (Barcelona Office)
Barcelona has recently witnessed a noticeable increase in the number of people spending their nights under bridges, in metro stations, and inside the corners of alleys and public spaces. This phenomenon has begun to attract attention and raise many questions about the reasons that led these individuals to this fate, especially since most of them came to Europe seeking better opportunities and a decent life.
Despite the differences in their stories, the common thread between them lies in the harsh conditions faced by this group, some of which resulted from wrong choices, and others contributed to complex economic and social factors. Some migrated in the hope of improving their professional and living conditions, but things did not go as planned, and they found themselves facing a reality more difficult than they had expected. Local associations in Barcelona confirm that drug and alcohol addiction, in addition to gambling, are among the most dangerous reasons that push some immigrants to lose stability and fall into a cycle of homelessness, especially in the absence of psychological and social support. These ills, according to specialists, are capable of destroying the life of any person unless they are aware of the consequences of sliding towards them. Despite the rosy picture that is drawn about Europe on social media, the reality is completely different. Life here is not always as simple as it appears on screens, and one miscalculated step may lead its owner to a situation that he did not imagine. This phenomenon remains a call to think deeply about the challenges facing immigrants, and the need to strengthen social support and accompanying programs to ensure better integration and prevent more people from falling into this difficult fate.
