Media reports and video testimonies reported the sound of powerful explosions in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, early Saturday morning, amid a state of tension and unclear reasons.
The French Press Agency reported that violent explosions and sounds resembling the flight of aircraft were heard starting around 2 am local time, while accounts on the "X" platform circulated videos documenting the explosions. Other reports indicated that the sounds continued until around 6:15 GMT. Reuters quoted eyewitnesses as saying they heard loud explosions in the early hours of the morning, with a power outage recorded in areas south of the city near a major military base. Local media also spoke of between six and seven explosions and low-flying aircraft over the capital, prompting residents of several neighborhoods to take to the streets, without an immediate comment from the Venezuelan authorities. In a related context, international media quoted Venezuelan sources claiming that military sites were targeted, including an air base and other facilities in Caracas, amid escalating regional tensions. Later, a CBS network correspondent reported that US officials were aware of the reports of the explosions, before indicating that US President Donald Trump ordered air strikes on sites inside Venezuela. In the first official response, the Venezuelan government announced its rejection of what it described as "US military aggression."
