American President Donald Trump decided to suspend the Diversity Visa Lottery program, known as the "Green Card," which allowed the suspect in the shootings at Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to enter the United States.
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, confirmed in a post on the "X" platform that, based on direct instructions from Trump, she directed her orders to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to temporarily halt the program. Noem said in the same post that "this person should not have been allowed into the country in the first place," referring to the seriousness of the incident and its security implications. The Diversity Visa program annually grants up to 50,000 permanent residence cards through a lottery, for the benefit of citizens from countries with low representation in the United States, especially from the African continent.
