The Algerian writer and politician, Abdelkrim Zeglache, warned of what he described as the inevitable collapse of the economic model in place in Algeria, considering that the continuous decline in the value of the Algerian dinar against the US dollar since 1970 reflects the failure of economic, financial, and social policies adopted over decades.
Zeglache explained, in a post published on his Facebook account, that the curve showing the evolution of the dinar's value does not need an in-depth technical reading to understand its implications, stressing that the national currency is experiencing a continuous decline that may lead it, according to his expression, to "economic zero," as a result of political and economic choices that did not come from a vacuum. He considered that the current economic system is not sustainable or continuous, stressing that the question is no longer related to the possibility of collapse, but rather to the size of the losses it may leave, and whether it will lead the country to chaos or whether the awareness of citizens and their ability to move may spare Algeria what he described as the major catastrophe. The writer noted that the increase in the population is matched by a decline in income, at a time when, according to his statement, the proceeds from hydrocarbons are being used to buy social peace instead of investing them in building a productive economy, considering that this circumstantial choice has turned into a state policy, and that any system that needs to buy social peace to remain in power cannot build the country or bring it out of its crisis. Zeglache stopped at what he called the bet of some parties, whether abroad or within the authority, on the collapse of the economy, highlighting that these, in his words, do not experience the consequences of this collapse, while the citizens inside Algeria bear its real cost, especially with regard to their future and the future of their children. The Algerian politician called at the end of his post for the need to actively engage in political life and impose presence in the public arena, stressing that protecting the interests of citizens and ensuring the future of future generations passes, according to his statement, through participation in decision-making and not letting the management of the country's affairs continue with the same approach adopted for decades.
