Health officials in the United States said on Friday that whole milk powder used in the manufacture of infant formula produced by the company "By Heart" may be the source of contamination linked to an outbreak of food poisoning affecting dozens of children.
The US Food and Drug Administration clarified that tests revealed the presence of a type of bacteria capable of causing illness in two samples associated with infant formula products, including an unopened box whose germ matched a sample from an infected child. The administration also showed that the same bacteria appeared in samples of organic whole milk powder used in manufacturing, in addition to a sample of dried milk provided to the company, stressing at the same time that the results are not final and that the investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact source of the contamination.
