The Algerian Ministry of Education announced on Tuesday the suspension of studies on Wednesday and Thursday in most of the country's provinces, in anticipation of a strong storm accompanied by winds expected to reach speeds of 120 kilometers per hour.
The ministry clarified in a statement that the decision came based on an "urgent telegram" issued by the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, concerning a special weather bulletin warning of strong winds at this speed. The weather bulletin, issued by the meteorological services, includes 52 provinces out of 69, most of which are in the north, where about 80% of the population resides. For its part, the Civil Protection services called on citizens to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents, including preparing alternative non-electrical lighting, and securing metal objects and items that could fall from roofs, balconies, and windows. It also recommended avoiding standing or passing near trees and electricity poles, with the need to reduce speed for drivers during sudden winds and to travel only when necessary. Last week, Algeria witnessed heavy rainfall that caused the death of a sixty-year-old man in the state of Relizane (west of the country), and a girl in the state of Chlef, about 200 kilometers west of the capital, according to Civil Protection data. The large amounts of rain also led to the recording of floods in several areas, including Algiers and Tipaza. It is worth noting that neighboring Tunisia experienced unusual rainfall during the same period, which also resulted in a number of deaths.
