The Spanish National Court in Madrid rejected, in a decision issued on January 27, 2026, the request to extradite former Algerian Senator Abdelkader Djedi to the Algerian authorities, a step that highlights the Spanish judiciary's commitment to international human rights standards.
This decision comes after Djedi appeared before the court on January 26, 2026, where he reiterated his adherence to his legal rights and rejected any action that would prejudice his freedom and security. The "Chouaa" Organization for Human Rights welcomed the decision, considering it a positive step that reflects respect for the independence of the judiciary and the protection of rights and freedoms, stressing the need not to turn international judicial cooperation mechanisms into tools to pursue opponents or silence critical voices. The organization also expressed its concern about the continued persecution and harassment that Djedi is subjected to in Algeria, considering that this reflects a repressive policy practiced against independent voices. The organization indicates that the Board of Directors of the Inter-Parliamentary Union unanimously approved on October 23, 2025, the acceptance of the complaint submitted by the organization on behalf of Djedi, regarding the constitutional violations and judicial prosecutions that affected his parliamentary work. "Chouaa" called on the Spanish authorities to continue protecting the legal and humanitarian rights of Djedi and ensuring his safety, stressing that it will continue to follow the case at the international and legal levels, in defense of freedom of expression, the independence of the legislative authority, and the preservation of human dignity.
