HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
In an unprecedented step in the history of trade between Morocco and Ghana, the latter succeeded in exporting a shipment of 26 tons of mango fruit to the Moroccan market via land transport, a remarkable shift that reflects a new dynamic in logistical connections within the African continent.
The operation, which was implemented during the year 2025, relied on trucks that covered the distance between the two countries, passing through the southern provinces of the Kingdom, before returning loaded with agricultural products, which was considered a practical indicator of the smoothness and security of the land corridors that connect the north of the continent with its west. This development is seen as going beyond its commercial dimension, carrying clear logistical and political implications, especially with regard to the stability and security of the desert crossings, especially the El-Guerguerat crossing, which has become a vital artery for cross-border African trade in recent years. After Morocco intervened in late 2020 to secure the crossing and ensure the smooth flow of trucks, this corridor regained the confidence of economic actors, which was reflected in the increase in the volume of exchanges and the diversity of goods transported by land between Morocco and sub-Saharan African countries. From the Ghanaian side, this step falls within a strategic approach that aims to diversify export channels and reduce dependence on sea and air transport, while strengthening the presence of agricultural products in new markets, where Morocco constitutes a natural gateway to the north of the continent. As for the Moroccan level, this achievement embodies the fruit of the bet on making the southern provinces a continental logistical platform, supported by continuous investments in road infrastructure and logistical areas, which has strengthened the Kingdom's position as a key hub in African transport and trade networks. Thus, a cross-border mango shipment turns into a clear message that African land corridors have entered a new phase, and that Morocco has become a pivotal number in the equation of logistical connection within the continent.
