The city of Mohammedia has witnessed a remarkable spread of mosquitoes in recent days, or what Moroccans know as "Shniwla," in various neighborhoods of the city, in a phenomenon described by a number of residents as "strange."
A number of Mohammedia residents confirmed that the insects have become widespread during the evening hours, turning sitting on balconies or opening windows into a daily struggle. Social media sites were filled with angry posts and comments from the city's residents, who complained about the worsening situation in the absence of effective intervention to reduce the spread of mosquitoes. A number of activists considered that the phenomenon repeats every year, but this time it seems more severe, calling for intensified spraying and treatment campaigns in black spots and areas near stagnant water. While waiting for action from the concerned authorities, a number of families are forced to resort to traditional preventive measures, such as household pesticides and insect repellent devices, while calls are rising for official action to avoid the repetition of such scenes that disrupt the lives of residents and make them vulnerable to many dangers.
