HIBAPRESS – Tangier
HIBAPRESS has learned from a source inside the Mgouga district council in the city of Tangier that the council is preparing to take legal action and file a lawsuit against a community activist, following a post he published on Facebook, describing the district as "Epstein Island", referring to the American businessman Jeffrey Epstein.
According to the same source, this post sparked widespread controversy within the council, as a number of members considered that what was stated in it constituted a direct insult to the reputation of the institution and its elected officials, and included phrases they described as unacceptable, because of the implications that affect the image of the public facility. The source added that the district council is considering resorting to the judiciary in order to arrange legal responsibilities and defend the reputation of the institution, in light of what it considered a transgression of the limits of freedom of expression via social media. In contrast, the post left a wide reaction among social media users, as opinions were divided between those who considered it an expression of a critical stance, and those who saw it as an offense that warrants legal follow-up. It is expected that this issue will witness developments in the coming days, in the event that judicial procedures are initiated officially, especially in view of the controversy it has raised at the local level in the city of Tangier.
