French authorities have announced permission to cull around 200 wolves to address the spread of their packs in agricultural lands near major cities, where their number exceeds one thousand in the country.
Following a European decision, France is about to cull around 200 wolves. French Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard, stated that the ministry has raised the maximum limit for culling from 19% to 21% of the total wolf population, with the possibility of increasing it to 23%, noting that wolf attacks are causing increasing damage to livestock farmers and severe stress for them. This decision comes in the wake of a decision by the European Parliament last year to downgrade the wolf's classification from "strictly protected" to "protected," which allowed EU countries to take limited hunting measures to prevent the extinction of the species while protecting livestock.
