Chad announced on Monday that it has closed its borders with Sudan until further notice, following "repeated incursions" by armed groups, two days after the Rapid Support Forces, which are fighting a war against the Sudanese army, announced their control of the border town of Tina.
Chadian Minister of Information, Mohammed Kassim Sharif, said in a statement: "This decision comes after repeated incursions and violations on Chadian territory committed by the warring forces in Sudan," stressing that N'Djamena wants to avoid "any widening of the conflict." Sharif stressed that Chad "reserves the right to respond to any aggression or violation of its territorial sovereignty and borders." The government decision clarified that "cross-border movement of goods and individuals has been suspended," with the possibility of allowing exceptions provided they are "for humanitarian reasons only."
