Italy announced the adoption of a unified electronic platform for issuing short and long-term residence visas, a step aimed at modernizing the consular system and accelerating administrative procedures.
The new system includes applications for short-stay Schengen visas, in addition to study, work, and family reunification visas within long-term residencies. The digital platform allows applicants to fill out forms, upload documents, and pay fees electronically through a single portal, reducing paperwork and limiting the number of in-person appointments. However, biometric data collection (fingerprints and photo) will still be carried out at accredited centers or consulates in accordance with the applicable regulations. The system is scheduled to be implemented during 2026, with a transitional phase to ensure the continuity of services without disruption. This transformation is expected to contribute to reducing processing times, improving the efficiency of administrative performance, and enhancing transparency in the application review process. The step reflects a broader European trend towards the digitalization of immigration and travel services and positions Italy in an advanced position within the process of updating visa procedures in line with modern digital standards.
