42 people died and 3087 others were injured, including 125 seriously, in 2266 traffic accidents recorded within urban areas during the week of April 6 to 12.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security attributed the main causes of these accidents, in order, to drivers' lack of attention, failure to yield the right of way, lack of control, pedestrians' lack of attention, excessive speed, failure to maintain a safe distance, failure to stop at the "stop" sign, unauthorized lane changes, improper overtaking, driving in the wrong direction, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop at a red light, changing direction without signaling, and driving on the left side of the road. Regarding control and enforcement operations in the field of traffic, the same source clarified that the security services were able to record 50,583 violations, draw up 6970 reports referred to the Public Prosecution, and collect 43,613 amicable fines. The statement indicated that the amount collected reached 9,665,150 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal impound was 5441 vehicles, the number of documents withdrawn was 6970 documents, and the number of vehicles that were stopped was 574 vehicles.
