The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office in France announced that it has been tasked with overseeing the investigation into a shooting that occurred on Friday morning in a Paris suburb, resulting in one death and four injuries.
On Friday morning, a man opened fire while driving his car on a road in the towns of Trappes and La Verrière, adjacent to the French capital's suburbs, killing one person and injuring four.
The Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation on charges of "murder linked to a terrorist organization, taking into account that the acts were committed due to the real or presumed belonging to a specific race, ethnicity, nation, or religion."
It added in a statement that a man has been arrested and placed in detention.
The investigation also focuses on "possession of Category A weapons," which include in particular automatic weapons that fire in bursts, and "criminal terrorist association with the aim of preparing crimes against persons."
The investigations have been entrusted to the Sub-Directorate of Counter-Terrorism, as the coordinating body, and to the regional directorates of the National Police and the General Directorate for Internal Security.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said in a post on the X platform that the incident was "extremely serious."
The incident occurred around 10:30 AM (8:30 AM GMT). The man was quickly arrested in the neighboring town of Coignières, according to a police source.
According to the prefecture of Yvelines, emergency services intervened, noting that the situation "has not yet stabilized."
The mayor of Trappes, Ali Rahmi, told BFM TV, "It is clear that the shooter was firing randomly and wanted to cause a massacre."
He added that "the deceased is of African origin," noting that one of the injured "is in critical condition and is of North African origin."
