HIBAPRESS – Follow-up
Brazil is witnessing crucial elections today, Sunday, in which the current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, are competing in the presidential runoff.
While Lula's electoral campaign focuses on continuing his social policies, his competitor is advocating for a tougher approach to combating crime and a new political beginning.
Lula, who has been president of the country since 2023, is seeking a fourth term. Lula, 80, previously served as president of the country from 2003 to 2010.
Flávio Bolsonaro has held a seat in the Senate since 2019 and is running for president for the first time.
As for his father, who served as president of the country between 2019 and 2023, the Supreme Court sentenced him to more than 27 years in prison on charges of attempting a coup. He is currently under house arrest for health reasons.
