HIBAPRESS – Ahmed Wazrouti
The city of Taroudant is preparing to write a new chapter in its development path, by launching a large-scale urban rehabilitation program, which extends from the year 2025 to 2029, and aims to enhance the city's attractiveness on various levels: tourism, economic, social and cultural. On October 15th, a multi-party agreement was signed to finance and implement this ambitious project, in harmony with the royal vision aimed at promoting ancient cities as a lever for sustainable development and a field for preserving the national cultural heritage.
This workshop represents one of the most prominent integrated projects that the city will witness, with a total cost of approximately 3 billion dirhams, distributed over a series of projects that combine the preservation of Taroudant's historical identity and its integration into the process of urban modernization. Direct supervision and close follow-up by the governor of the province. The governor of Taroudant province, Mabrouk Thabit, is credited with his vital and pivotal role in bringing this project into effect, through his precise coordination leadership between the various stakeholders, and his continuous oversight to ensure the involvement of all local and regional actors in the success of this major workshop. The governor of the province played an effective role in pushing forward consultations, and ensuring balance between the economic, social and heritage dimensions of the plan, reflecting an integrated and comprehensive vision for the rehabilitation of the city. Multiple axes with a balanced vision The project is divided into two main axes that include interventions inside and outside the walls of the ancient city. An amount of 977.2 million dirhams has been allocated for the programmed projects inside the city, including the preparation of roads, streets and squares (521.18 million dirhams), the restoration and maintenance of historical and architectural monuments (269.85 million dirhams), strengthening the social offer by equipping youth centers, sports halls and cultural centers (57 million dirhams), and strengthening tourism and economic attractiveness (129.17 million dirhams). As for the projects programmed outside the walls, their cost amounts to 2022.8 million dirhams, and includes comprehensive urban rehabilitation (819.29 million dirhams), strengthening social services (816.50 million dirhams), revitalizing the local economy (335 million dirhams), as well as renewing public networks (52 million dirhams). A broad institutional alliance with a consistent dynamic This workshop is supervised by an alliance of 14 governmental and regional institutions, including the Ministry of Interior, the Municipality of Taroudant, the Ministries of Endowments, Health, National Education, Industry and Commerce, and the Souss-Massa Regional Council. This participatory dynamic comes with effective coordination and continuous follow-up from the governor of the province, who was keen to consolidate the approach of proximity, and ensure the convergence between the various sectors. Sources from within the Taroudant community confirmed that this program constitutes a new launch towards integrated urban development, which puts the citizen at the heart of the priorities, while preserving the historical and architectural character of the city, praising the governor's leadership and decisive role in ensuring the implementation of the project according to the specified schedule and according to the required quality standards.
