HIBAPRESS

In light of successive years of drought and the worsening international crises, the Kingdom has placed the water and energy files at the forefront of its strategic priorities, considering them as two essential pillars for ensuring stability and strengthening national sovereignty.

Based on this approach, the government, in implementation of the insightful royal directives, adopted a proactive approach based on innovation and accelerating the pace of achievement, which enabled securing the supply of drinking water and reducing the effects of climate fluctuations on various sectors. Expanding seawater desalination projects is one of the most prominent transformations that the water policy has witnessed during this stage, as Morocco moved from limited experiments to large-scale production, which contributed to alleviating pressure on traditional resources and enhancing the meeting of the needs of cities and coastal areas, as well as supporting agricultural and industrial activities in light of the scarcity of rainfall. In the same context, the project to link the Sebou and Bouregreg basins stands out as a strategic achievement that was achieved in record time and with national competencies. This project was not limited to being a temporary solution, but rather formed an effective mechanism for transferring the water surplus to areas suffering from shortages, which contributed to securing the water supply for the Rabat-Casablanca axis, the economic and demographic heart of the Kingdom. This connection has provided greater flexibility in managing water resources, by ensuring their flow between basins according to needs, which spared the country worrying scenarios of water scarcity, especially in light of the significant decline in dam storage. It also contributed to protecting the economic fabric and ensuring the continuity of vital services, thereby strengthening the concept of water sovereignty as an inevitable strategic choice. This dynamic is inseparable from the ambition to achieve energy sovereignty in the Kingdom, where renewable energies are increasingly being used to operate desalination plants and water connection projects, within an integrated framework that enhances the independence of the national decision in managing vital resources. In this context, Morocco continues steadily on the path of energy transition, by consolidating the position of renewable energies as a strategic choice to face climate challenges and ensure its energy security. Energy has turned from being just a lever for economic growth to a pivotal element in environmental and social balances. During this government term, the Kingdom recorded tangible progress in diversifying its energy mix, through investment in solar, wind and hydropower, in addition to engaging in the development of green hydrogen. In the end, the government considers that the success of this strategic workshop comes through continuing structural reforms, stimulating investment, and supporting innovation and national competencies, which enhances Morocco's positioning as a key regional player in the field of clean energy and sustainable development.
