A statement by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project has sparked debate about the revenue benefits for the countries through which the project will pass. Tebboune questioned the volume of gas that would reach Europe given that the pipeline will traverse 14 countries, each of which, according to his statement, would receive a 5 percent share.
Tebboune addressed the distribution of gas among the countries involved in the project, questioning what would remain for export to Europe, referring to the shares of the countries whose territories the pipeline will cross. The African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project aims to connect Nigeria's gas resources to Moroccan and European markets, passing through several West African countries, while creating opportunities for gas utilization and enhancing energy infrastructure in the concerned nations. The statement drew criticism from commentators who considered that questioning the feasibility of West African countries benefiting from the project reflects a negative stance towards their developmental aspirations. The success of the project, according to its economic approach, is linked to its ability to provide the largest quantity to European Union countries.
