Faced with the resurgence of monkeypox (Mpox) in Africa, considered the epicenter of this epidemic, nearly a million doses of vaccine are expected, announced the director general of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Jean Kaseya.
“We are moving towards securing nearly a million doses” of vaccines against Mpox, the official said on Wednesday during a meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa, before stressing the need for a transfer of technology in this area.
And the official specified that some 215,000 doses of vaccine have already been “secured” from a Danish manufacturer, urging this manufacturer to carry out a technology transfer for the benefit of African manufacturers.
Several countries such as Spain, France and Germany have made promises to deliver vaccine doses to African countries on the front lines of this epidemic.
With figures to support his argument, Mr. Kaseya did not fail to point out that as of August 27, some 22,683 suspected cases and 622 deaths linked to the various clades of Mpox have been recorded on the continent.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and the Central African Republic are the countries most affected by the virus, prompting the World Health Organization to declare the epidemic a “public health emergency of international concern.”
