Globally, hospital costs associated with treating resistant pathogens estimated in the report are estimated to be USD 730 billion per year. If vaccines could be deployed against all pathogens evaluated, a third of the hospital costs associated with AMR would be erased.

A global, person-centered approach applied to all health systems is necessary to prevent, diagnose and treat infections. It takes due account of the fact that vaccination is essential to prevent AMR and is particularly effective when combined with other interventions.

At the 79th high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on AMR on September 26, world leaders endorsed a political declaration committing to a clearly defined set of goals and actions including reducing by 10% the number of human deaths, estimated at 4.95 million, associated with AMR per year by 2030. The declaration emphasizes key aspects, including the importance of access to vaccines, medicines, treatments and diagnostic products, while calling for the establishment of incentives and financing mechanisms to stimulate health research, innovation and multi-sectoral development in fight against AMR.
