An international company has been awarded a contract to prepare a feasibility study for drilling the Morocco-Spain continental link project, with the study expected to be completed by next June.
This comes as the Higher Joint Commission, in charge of the project, approaches its forty-fourth meeting in Morocco.
In this context, the Spanish newspaper “El Pais” reported new details related to the project, based on data provided by the Spanish supervision company SECEGSA in cooperation with the Moroccan Society for Studies of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED).
According to this data, which marks half a century of the project idea (1974-2024), it is estimated that the cost of the planned tunnel will reach around 6 billion euros.
New budgets are also allocated to carry out studies and conclude contracts with companies specializing in this field.
It is expected that this tunnel, which will connect the “Malabata” area in Tangier and “Punta Paloma” in the south of Spain (14 kilometers from Tarifa), will allow the passage of around 13 million passengers per year.
An informed source reported that Spanish company Herrenknecht Ibérica SA, which specializes in tunneling techniques and produces some of the world’s largest drilling machines, won the contract to carry out the drilling feasibility study.
The amount of the contract is approximately 296,400 euros (equivalent to 3 million dirhams), with June 2025 set as the date for finalization of the study.
