The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has issued his annual report on the Moroccan Sahara, in which he recommends that the UN Security Council extend the mandate of MINURSO for 12 months, until October 31, 2026.
Like previous years, this report, officially released today, Wednesday, on the UN website, reviews the developments in the Moroccan Sahara issue, both on the ground and internationally. It also provides an overview of the political process since last October and until September 2025.
It also addresses the security aspects related to MINURSO's work, especially its civilian activities and the challenges it faces in carrying out its mission.
On the other hand, this annual report addresses the human rights issue, highlighting Morocco's efforts to promote and protect human rights in the Moroccan Sahara, and also points to violations of fundamental rights and freedoms in the Tindouf camps.
In conclusion, the report recommends, in particular, extending the mandate of MINURSO for 12 months.
The Security Council will hold a meeting at the end of October 2025 to adopt the new resolution on the Moroccan Sahara, which will be presented by the United States, the penholder.
