Mussaed Boules, Senior Advisor to the US President for African and Arab Affairs, affirmed in an interview with France 24 that the recent UN Security Council resolution on renewing the mandate of MINURSO was balanced and satisfactory to all parties.
Boules said that Algeria and the Polisario Front did not object to the resolution, excluding some simple formal observations in the preamble of the resolution, adding that the main items carried clear signals to support the continuation of the political process under the supervision of the United Nations. Boules affirmed that the United States is pushing all parties to enter into a direct and serious dialogue, indicating that the goal is to reach a final solution based on the Moroccan autonomy proposal, which enjoys international support and credibility, while preserving the unity of the Moroccan territory and enhancing regional stability. Boules added that direct negotiations will include Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania to facilitate an atmosphere of understanding and dialogue, stressing that Washington encourages a responsible discussion that can lead to a balanced and satisfactory agreement for all parties. Boules pointed out that the possibility of resorting to a referendum is not required, and that reaching a practical political consensus represents a realistic option if the parties commit to seriousness and responsibility in the dialogue. Boules concluded his statement by emphasizing that the United States will continue its support for the autonomy plan and for the efforts of Morocco, carrying a clear vision to achieve stability, peace, and development in the Maghreb region.
