The cartographic work of the General Population and Housing Census (RGPH) 2024 has enabled the division of the national territory into approximately 38,000 census districts, announced, Wednesday in Rabat, the High Commissioner for Planning, Ahmed Lahlimi Alami.

Speaking at a conference organized by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) on the occasion of the start of the operational stage of the RGPH 2024, Mr. Lahlimi indicated that the cartographic work allowed the georeferencing of more than 4 million constructions in urban areas, 75% of which are classified as “Modern Moroccan Houses”, as well as the identification of nearly 34,000 douars in rural areas.

In addition, the High Commissioner for Planning stressed that the operation of mapping economic establishments allowed for the georeferencing of economic, socio-cultural establishments, municipal facilities, associative establishments, as well as weekly souks.

The results of this operation, he explained, will allow users to produce dynamic and interactive maps through a dedicated platform, showing the distribution of economic activities with detailed information on the structure and characteristics of economic sectors at the national, regional and local levels.

This operation allowed the georeferencing of more than 1.3 million active economic establishments, the majority of which (more than 85%) are for-profit, as well as more than 1,000 active weekly markets, specified the High Commissioner for Planning.

Furthermore, Mr. Lahlimi recalled the importance of the RGPH, all of whose preparations are part of the high royal guidelines, expressing his gratitude to the Head of Government, the Minister of the Interior, the walis, governors and local authorities, as well as to all the partners who play an important role in establishing the conditions necessary for the success of the operational phase of this large-scale operation.

Carried out between April 2023 and March 2024, the mapping of the RGPH 2024 is a fundamental phase in the preparation and implementation of this large-scale national operation.

It consists of updating the administrative division of the Kingdom (boundaries of regions, provinces and municipalities), updating the digital maps of the RGPH 2014 covering the entire national territory and dividing the entire national territory into census districts, control sectors and supervision zones in order to ensure, during the RGPH, an exhaustive survey of the population of Morocco without omission or double counting.

The mapping of economic establishments, for its part, was carried out in an integrated manner with the preparatory cartographic work of the RGPH 2024. The field work was carried out during the period from April 2023 to May 2024 using an integrated IT solution (mobile and web) with a fully digitalized process using connected tablets equipped with GPS and a satellite image background.
