HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
The Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has sent an urgent circular to regional governors and prefects, requiring the formation of regional committees to count and monitor illegal and dilapidated buildings, especially those with floors built outside legal regulations and posing a danger to their residents.
This step comes after the tragedy witnessed in the city of Fez in recent weeks, which resulted in the death of 22 people, and brought back to the forefront the risks of inadequate housing. The committees will conduct field visits within a period not exceeding 60 days to prepare accurate reports on the situation of these buildings, with the proposal of urgent measures including evacuation, reinforcement, or demolition when necessary, in coordination with the Ministry of National Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy, with the aim of protecting lives and preventing the recurrence of similar tragedies.
