Nizar Baraka, the Minister of Equipment and Water, revealed the launch of a project to connect the Bouregreg and Oum Er-Rbia basins at the end of 2026, with a transfer capacity of up to 800 million cubic meters annually, within the framework of a strategy to enhance water security and redistribute resources among the regions.
The minister explained, during his guest appearance on the "Décryptage" program on the waves of MFM radio, that this project falls within what he described as "water highways," which are based on transferring water from basins that are experiencing abundance to others suffering from shortages, giving the national system greater flexibility in facing consecutive years of drought. The connection of the Bouregreg basin with the Oum Er-Rbia basin will enable the transfer of up to 800 million cubic meters annually, to support the supply of drinking water and secure the needs of areas with high pressure on resources, in addition to supporting agricultural stability. Baraka affirmed that the project constitutes a practical step in the transition from circumstantial management of water crises to long-term structural planning, aiming to reduce spatial disparities and ensure a more equitable and sustainable distribution of water resources.
