HIBAPRESS – Mohamed Zariouh
The recent drowning of an Algerian young man on the eastern coast has sparked a state of alert among various security agencies, after his body was found under suspicious circumstances, raising concerns about attempts at irregular migration by sea.
The incident occurred on Friday, February 20, 2026, at the Harsh beach in the Atroukot commune of the Driouch province, where it was swept ashore by sea currents. Local authorities and the Royal Gendarmerie rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the news, where the site was cordoned off and the necessary investigations were opened in accordance with the legal procedures in force in these cases. The victim was in his thirties, held Algerian nationality, and data suggested that his death was the result of drowning while attempting to migrate by swimming towards the city of Ceuta. The body was discovered by some citizens who reported it to the authorities, who intervened quickly, and it was transferred to the morgue in Nador Hospital in order to complete the judicial investigations, which are being conducted under the supervision of the Public Prosecution, to determine the circumstances and conditions of the incident. This incident comes days after a similar incident in Al Hoceima, where the body of another person was found on Sabadia beach, reflecting the increase in attempts at irregular migration by sea and the depth of the risks that threaten the lives of many young people, who are trying to reach the other shore in risky adventures.
