The Israeli army announced on Tuesday the killing of Iranian Basij commander Gholam Reza Soleimani, without any confirmation from Tehran so far.
The Israeli army spokesman said in a statement: "In a precise strike in Tehran: The Israeli army eliminates the commander of the Basij unit." The statement explained: "The air forces, with precise intelligence guidance from the Military Intelligence Directorate, carried out a precise attack yesterday (Monday) in the heart of Tehran, which resulted in the assassination of Gholam Reza Soleimani, the commander of the Basij unit for the past six years." He added: "The Basij forces are part of the armed forces of the terrorist Iranian regime." He pointed out that "in the midst of internal protests in Iran, especially in the recent period, which has escalated in intensity, the Basij forces, led by Soleimani, launched large-scale suppression operations in which excessive violence, mass arrests, and force were used against civilian demonstrators." He concluded by saying: "The assassination of Soleimani is added to dozens of prominent leaders in the armed forces of the terrorist Iranian regime who have been eliminated during the operation, and represents another strong blow to the command and control security systems of the regime. The Israeli army will continue to act strongly against the leaders of the terrorist Iranian regime."
